Border Design to create a naturalistic look for a new garden bed
The Brief
• Creating a new back garden bed
• Repetition of planting from nearby beds to bring a cohesive look
• A naturalistic style of planting – to work with the garden’s mature oak trees,
existing shrubs/planting and contemporary house extension
• Colour scheme of mostly blues and purples with contrasting terracotta
• Planting to be low - medium maintenance
• The planting must look good when viewed through the large full length
windows at the back of the house
• Plants which will flourish in full sun
• Plants which flourish in loamy/clayey soil
• Interest all year round

Planting description
A naturalistic planting scheme to work with the garden’s mature oak trees,
existing shrubs/planting and contemporary house extension. Repetition of
planting in adjacent borders creates a cohesive look. The evergreen grass
Anemanthele lessoniana ‘Sirocco’ provides year round structure and softens the
existing shrubs. Spring, summer and autumn flowering perennials have been
chosen to work well with the Anemanthele and provide colour and long lasting
seedheads. Bulbs create additional interest from early spring to summer. Colour
– mostly blues and purples, with contrasting terracotta, unifies the planting.

Rebecca has transformed our garden by redesigning and developing the borders. She drew up detailed plans and illustrations for planting which took account of the particular environment, appearance over the seasons and our preferences to create a beautiful natural look which we love.
